Holy Name Academic Team
Holy Name has a rich history of academic success which begins with the Fifth Grade Academic team. All Fifth Graders have the opportunity to try out for the academic team in the fall of the school year. There are four components, future problem solving, quick recall, composition, and written assessments (arts and humanities, language arts, social studies, science, math). Each team member is allowed to participate in a maximum of three events.
In the sixth grade, the team participates in a single event called Academic Showcase. It is held the first Saturday in December. Try-outs for this team are held soon after the beginning of the new school year.
The Holy Name Middle Grade Academic Team is an extracurricular program that fosters academic excellence in areas of math, science, social studies, arts and humanities, and language arts and written composition. This is accomplished by team members developing high levels of knowledge and expertise in the above areas. These areas are further highlighted by the intense “Quick Recall” competition, which mixes high levels of knowledge with lightning fast reflexes and tactics. Futuristic thinking and developing strong problem solving skills is another component of academics, and is tested to the maximum in Holy Name's Future Problem Solving Program and team.
A major driving force in team development at all levels is academic competition between other schools in Holy Name's District, Region, and the State at large. Holy Name has participated in the Governor's Cup State wide competitions since the inception of the KAAC, (Kentucky Association for Academic Competition) in the mid 1980s. This competition is progressive with students and teams moving from local District competitions to Regional and culminating in the State Governor's Cup competition held each year in Louisville . Holy Name has become a major contender in all of these competitions and has developed into one of the more powerful programs in the Western portion of the State. In addition to the KAAC sponsored program the Holy Name team regularly travels and competes in State wide invitational academic competitions held by other schools. The most recent of these was the Ballard High School Middle Grades Invitational Academic Tournament held in Louisville, in which Holy Name won first place in Quick Recall, first place in Future Problem Solving, and brought home to Henderson the first place overall trophy for the whole tournament.
It is a deep part of the tradition of the Holy Name Middle Grades Academic Team to produce winning teams, teams which highlight the quality of our student's commitment to excellence.
