To Twenty-Five Years of History

In 1979, the library was located in a windowless upstairs classroom with no heat or ventilation. The book shelves were green or gray metal utility shelves. The tables were old mismatched donated kitchen or office tables. Kathy Myers was hired as a one-third-time librarian. Previously volunteers process the few new books and typed card catalog cards. Ms. Francile Banken, a 5th grade teacher, was responsible for ordering any new books. Mother volunteers also helped children check out books whenever a teacher brought in an entire class.

In 1980, Mrs.Janet Hendon, a certified librarian, was hired for a half-time position. Weekly library classes for each homeroom at Holy Name were begun. The first New Book Fair fundraiser was held in the Spring of 1981.

When Sister Shirley Howe became Principal of Holy Name School the summer of 1982, she suggested a different type of fundraiser to obtain money for library books and supplies.....

Kindergarten was added as a library class in 1990 and Pre-School classes were included in 1997. Junior High library classes were discontinued and those students now come to the library individually as needed.
